CIS type Line Scan Camera

Product

Q
Where are CIS type Line Scan Cameras manufactured?

A All units are produced in Japan.

Canon's CIS (Contact Image Sensor) type Line Scan Cameras are proudly manufactured at our headquarters factory in Japan.
All development and design processes are handled entirely by our in-house engineering teams at domestic facilities, ensuring consistent quality, reliability, and performance across our product lineup.

Q
At 600 dpi resolution, how small can objects be?

A Objects larger than approximately 42 μm can be captured.

At 600 dpi, each pixel corresponds to approximately 42 μm (micrometers).
Depending on conditions such as color, contrast, and lighting, CIS Line Scan Cameras may capture visual elements like foreign particles or surface defects that are larger than this size.42 μm (micrometers).

Q
What is 600 dpi equivalent to in terms of pixel count for FA cameras? (4K? 8K?)

A It depends on the scan width, but here's a reference point:

With a scan width of 330 mm (as used in Canon's CIS Line Scan Camera IDCCFC-330C”), 600 dpi corresponds to roughly 8K pixels.
Note: The actual pixel count varies depending on the specific scan width of the CIS Line Scan Camera.

Q
Which type of connector is used for Camera Link?

A An SDR (Shrunk D Ribbon) connector is used.

Compared to the conventional MDR (Mini D Ribbon) type, the SDR connector is more compact and helps support the slim design of Canon's CIS Line Scan Cameras.

Q
Can I plug it into a standard 100V outlet, and is a power supply included?

A Yes, it can be used with a standard 100V outlet, as long as the product's power requirements are met.

However, please note that a power supply is not included and must be prepared separately.

Q
If the object is not exactly at the focus point, can the camera still capture usable images?

A Yes, to some extent it can.

As the object moves away from the focus point, the image gradually becomes blurred.
However, the camera does not suddenly lose visibility or go completely dark.
Depending on the application and the object being scanned, some users have successfully used the camera even when the target is slightly offset from the optimal focus position.

How to Use

Q
What types of objects are suitable for inspection with CIS type Line Scan Cameras?

A They are especially well-suited for surface and dimensional inspection of flat or continuous materials.

Canon’s CIS type Line Scan Cameras use a contact-type structure, making them ideal for inspecting the surfaces of the following types of objects:

➢ Flat materials (e.g., metal sheets, glass, tiles, printed matter)
➢ Continuous roll materials (e.g., film, fabric, web materials)
➢ Cylindrical objects (e.g., beverage containers, labels)

Thanks to their extremely low image distortion, they are also highly effective for precision dimensional inspection.
In recent years, they have been increasingly used in high-precision applications such as inspecting electrode sheets for lithium-ion batteries in EVs.

Q
What else do I need to prepare to use the CIS Line Scan Camera?

A The following components are typically required:
  ➢ Frame grabber board
➢ Camera Link cable (SDR connector type)
  ➢ Power supply
  ➢ Power cable
  ➢ PC
  ➢ Viewer software
  ➢ Transport mechanism
➢ Mounting structure for the CIS (e.g., stand or frame)

In addition, it is possible to attach an encoder to the transport mechanism and synchronize scanning via the frame grabber board.

Q
Can I reuse my existing inspection system when replacing a standard FA camera with a Canon CIS Line Scan Camera?

A Yes, in many cases it is possible.

Several customers have successfully retrofitted Canon CIS type Line Scan Cameras into existing inspection systems originally designed for Camera Link-type FA cameras, without major changes to the mechanical setup.
The contact-type design of CIS cameras allows for closer placement to the object, which helps reduce the overall footprint of the inspection system.

Q
Do you recommend any specific frame grabber boards for your CIS type Line Scan Cameras?

A We don't officially recommend a specific brand, but our CIS type Line Scan Cameras have been successfully used with frame grabbers from several leading manufacturers.

If you'd like to know which models we've tested and confirmed to work, feel free to contact us. We'll be happy to provide more details.

Q
What kind of lighting should I prepare for your CIS type Line Scan Cameras?

A You won't need any external lighting.

All Canon CIS type Line Scan Cameras are equipped with built-in illumination, so there’s no need to install separate lighting systems.
This helps simplify your system design and saves valuable space.
